You know, it'd probably be quite simple to shore your way into a decent acting profession since Tom Hanks' child. I do not even think I'd hold it against you personally. However, Collin Hanks has selected to do something different -- become a really, really great performer. He is turning to one of my faves following a year of Dexter, among Fargo and now pulling out his comedy chops on Life in Pieces. Obviously, Hanks isn't the only star of the show.
The couple has three grown kids -- Heather who's married to Tim and has three kids; Matt who's recently divorced, lost all of his money, and is presently living in his parent's garage; and Greg who's married to Jen and contains a brand-new baby, their initial. This multi-generational family all lives in precisely the exact same city and they invest a great deal of time together, as TV households are not to do. Each episode of this series is broken up into 4 sections, thereby...Life in Pieces. On occasion the sections are all obviously attached, occasionally not.
Occasionally in chronological arrangement, other times not very. It seems somewhat strange, but it functions really well. Every relative usually gets some or all of a section, therefore we keep trapped with continuing story lines. The delineation of these sections permits us to leap from 1 household to another, as well as also the Seinfeldian style gymnastics that joins every episode together can be rather subtle, but they are always there. I am impressed not only by how well the series is composed with so many characters to keep up with in half hour chunks, but also by the very excellent performances of just about any member of this cast.
Hanks has probably the largest role and demonstrates that his comic timing is excellent. His scenes using Lister-Jones are excellent, and he plays to the "baby of the family" role only sufficient to keep it amusing each time it comes up. Running a close second in time is Lister-Jones, who might require a few episodes to develop on you. To be honest, her personality begins the series by providing birth and moving through the first days of motherhood, and no one really is likeable during this.
From the conclusion of the first season, she's on very top of her game coping with her husband's busy family. Important kudos also to James Brolin, who in age 77 finally appears to have found a function that he actually loves. His operation is the type that you see when someone is permitted to break loose and become the weird one, rather than constantly being the most serious, handsome person. They still riff differently on his great looks, but how do you not laugh at the man from Hotel riding a cart behind a mini pony when ingesting a mai-tai?
The younger women are put on, but Cunningham has the misfortune of needing to play with an awkward adolescent. Maybe he is just too good at it, or perhaps his personality is not written quite as harshly, but his scenes could be a modest cringe-y in this first season. The series was revived by CBS for another year too. I'd hazard against binge viewing too hard. Just like most sitcoms, seeing a lot of episodes in a row may leave you burnt out to the figures and the frenzied pace. Overall a excellent introduction year for Life in Pieces.
